The tournament in cooperation with the Unisport-Zentrum of the TU Darmstadt will take place on 11.06.2022 between 10.00 and 18.00 o'clock on the area of the university stadium.

The Darmstadt team “Darmstadt GAA e.V.”, which has already participated in various international hurling and camogie tournaments throughout Europe for more than seven years, will welcome teams from Austria, Switzerland and France in addition to several German teams for the second tournament round of the 2022 season. Up to 100 players are expected to compete with their teams for the matchday victory in hurling and camogie.

What is hurling/ camogie?

Hurling (men) and Camogie (women) is a team ball sport from Ireland that is over 3000 years old, where two teams competing against each other try to score more points than the other team. It is also known as the fastest grass sport in the world.

How did hurling/ camogie came to Darmstadt?

Hurling has already existed in Darmstadt for seven years in cooperation with Unisport Darmstadt and was brought back by coach Jakob Feldmann from a student exchange to Ireland and describes it with a smile: “like field hockey in the air, only very different” :)

True, there are also two teams, two goals, one ball and everyone holds a bat – the so-called hurl(ey). However, in both hurling and camogie, the ball is exchanged in the air between the players by passing it with a stick or by hand, and it is hit on a soccer goal with the goalposts extended upwards. The two contracting teams of nine players each, including the goalkeeper, try to hit the baseball-like leather ball (Irish: sliotar) with their bats into the goal for three points or between the extended goalposts for one point. The team with the most points wins the game.
